I have a friend who thinks that our art in the visual arena
i.e. painting needs more improvement in terms of expression
and rendering to at least approximate the quality of artworks
produced by Luna / Amorsolo and a few more well trained
and seasoned artists with fine art training in other countries.

This is borne out of his observation of the paintings produced by
contemporary artists who seem to have a lack of understanding of
the medium. Thereby, when compared with the works from Europe,
America or even other  asian countries a great difference in terms
of finish, materials used and conceptualization are keenly obvious.

Assuming there is a modicum of truth to this observation.
Would asking the following questions satisfactorily improve our
painters quality of work.
Is it because we don't have the means to buy good painting
supplies? Or is it because of lack of training, lack of devotion
and the inability to put in more hours? Or is it because
we lack qualified art/painting teachers? Or is it because the
filipino artist as a breed is still carrying the yoke of "puede na iyan"
attitude even when he honestly knows it is a mediocre kind
of job. Or is it all of the above.
If ever this is true, i'm sure there are a few filipino artists/painters
who are dying hard to get over the challenging hurdles in order
to not compromise their art to mediocrity. I've met quite a few of these
seasoned artists. But for the emerging ones it might help to keep in
mind that the art world is not easy and making artworks with the
"puede na iyan" attitude doesn't make life any easier.

Anyway, you know the saying talking the walk is different
from walking the walk.

catch you fellow artists next time..,

  1. The state of affairs in the arts.

The art collectors is another component influencing the painters in the Philippines. Quite a number of them want
artworks that are decorative in function. While there is
another segment who would appreciate it for arts sake.

If one would check out art galleries in Mega Mall, he/she is likely to find artworks that fall into these categories.

Last time when i was there, i overheard someone saying that
the art piece which because of the design patterns painted, will match her sofa and the wall. Obviously, this
person intends to use the painting for that purpose. How sad for the artist to have this kind of collector for his art. Why mr artist perhaps when your so called collector repaints her wall and changes her sofa, your painting might just have to go for it has outlived its purpose.

But perhaps, the collector'r extent of art education is just that far. This is one legitimate reason to suspect why they'd
huggle for a bargain price with the gallery because they're treating your artowrk like a wall paper. Or maybe your artwork
    looks like one.

    anyway, it's breakfast time.
i'd like to get my fix first then
continue the blog thoughts after a few minutes.

blog in if you want. cast your creative evaluation of
    our art circles.

  3. What's the scoop in Baguio?

Bencab museum is holding free photo workshops
of Tilak Hettige "dawn to dusk" photography
2:30-4:30pm on March 1-3 with the regular admission.

While you're there they have a bohemian community
you might want to check out at the hillside cafe by
SM and La azotea cafe on Session rd
    both within walking distance

You might also want to drop by the fine arts
department of the University of the Philippines
and check out the Michaelangelo wannabes.

Probably just the right time to enjoy the cool
weather and the refreshing air and fresh produce.

See you there for the flower festival on the
24th of February and treat your source of inspiration
for a few red roses and sweet scent of camia.
But if you have none then look for a baguio lass
    and get inspired.
